About the book

Timeless stories of adventure and daring. Thrilling reads. Addictive page-turners. The original bestsellers, now classics in their own right. The most popular fiction down the ages brought back as limited edition collectibles in the Retro Revivals series.

Michael Kingston has been recruited by his former language master Tommy Hambledon into Military Intelligence and entrusted with the responsibility of sabotaging German war efforts. While on the mission as a spy, he meets a German girl, Marie Bluehm, and Max von Bodenheim, a crippled German spymaster- and falls in love with the girl. With Tommy following his every move, will Kingston be able to do what needs to be done, in spite of the way he feels? And, what lies ahead for Tommy?

Said to be based on the early life of one of its authors Henry Cyril Coles, who became the youngest member of the British Foreign Intelligence Office during World War I, Drink to Yesterday, first published in England in 1940, and in 1941 in the U.S., is regarded as a departure from the bizarre spy-and-intrigue novels that were popular at the time in which it was written.

Manning Coles was the pen-name of Francis Oke Manning and Cyril Henry Coles. Both of them were crucially involved in Britain's service during the World War I. Drink to Yesterday remains a popular read to this day for its beautiful language, understated English wit, the characters and the thrill of a great spy anecdote.

'A magnificent novel of drama, intrigue and humour.' - Anthony Boucher
