Julie Sheer

Hiking and writing outdoor guidebooks isn't Julie Sheer's regular day job although she often wishes it was. A journalism lifer Julie's full-time vocation is assistant graphics editor for national and foreign news at the Los Angeles Times. In her spare time she writes the Outdoors Institute column for the paper's Outdoors section. A native Chicagoan Julie moved to Los Angeles in 1993. She got to know and love the coast and the Santa Monica Mountains and also experienced natural eventsthe 1993 Malibu fires and the 1994 Northridge earthquakethat drove other transplants to flee back east. In 1998 she co-authored The Outdoor Getaway Guide for Southern California with her partner Steve Hymon. Julie and Steve remain in the sunny Southland where they enjoy sneaking off to L.A.'s wild places for hiking fly fishing and skiing whenever time allows. They live in Pasadena with their two Labradors Sammy and Teddy who accompany them on many of their travels.
