Insightful, wise and driven by his resolve to bring people together, Guru Nanak Dev was a scholar, teacher, mentor and guide. The founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak was both a man of God as well as a man of the people. He believed that religion was a means of binding people together, and upheld the equality of all human beings. His sermons drew large crowds, transforming the lives of everyone he came in touch with. Through examples, songs and stories, he taught people to be kind, courageous and tolerant.

Guru Nanak Dev travelled far and wide - in India and beyond - for more than 20 years, to spread the message of peace and humanity. His teachings are recorded as 974 hymns in the holy book of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Nanak's birthday is celebrated worldwide as Guru Nanak Gurpurab to honour this compassionate, benevolent and loving guru.
