James Thurber

James Grover Thurber (1894–1961) was a celebrated American who donned many roles such as that of a cartoonist, writer, humorist, journalist, and even a playwright. Best known for his cartoons, his work was published mainly in The New Yorker and was collected in the form of books much later. Choosing ordinary people as the center of his work, he chose to showcase their day-to-day life and eccentricities in a comical way. His works have frequently been adapted into films, including The Male Animal (1942), The Battle of the Sexes (1959, based on Thurber's "The Catbird Seat"), and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty“ (adapted twice, in 1947 and 2013). A commemorative stamp was issued in Thurber's honor by the US Postal Service in 1994 and The Thurber Prize is given by the Thurber House in honour of the great humourist to honour humour writing and cartoons from 1997.
