MALNUTRITION: Fed or Misled? The Truth Beyond Food

Basanta Kumar Kar

We are eating more than ever. Yet the world is becoming increasingly malnourished. Are we well fed or simply misled?

Most of us believe malnutrition belongs somewhere else – to famine, poverty, or distant humanitarian crises.

It doesn't.

A child who is stunted. A pregnant woman with anaemia. An office-goer living on ultra-processed foods. An adolescent battling obesity. A patient recovering slowly despite eating enough. They may all have one thing in common: MALNUTRITION.

In Malnutrition: Fed or Misled? The Truth Beyond Food, the Nutrition Man of India challenges one of the greatest misconceptions of our time, that malnutrition is merely about too little food. Drawing upon science, public health, history, policy, field experiences, and global evidence, this book reveals the many avatars of malnutrition and their far-reaching impact on health, learning, productivity, economies, and future generations.

From undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies to obesity, food systems, sanitation, infections, agriculture, climate change, marketing, and nutrition misinformation, the book explores why this silent crisis persists across rich and poor nations alike and what it will take to overcome it.

Balanced and deeply human, this book is an invitation to rethink not just what we eat, but how we understand nourishment itself. Whether you are a healthcare professional, student, policymaker, educator, or simply someone seeking to make informed choices, this is an essential guide to one of the defining global challenges of our time.
